The Victoria Room, Darlinghurst

IMG_6368 (Small).JPGFrench Renaissance meets hip night club is the best way I can describe this super chic unconventional high tea venue (ie not a stuffy posh hotel).  Walking up the stairs, you feel like you’re entering a nightclub. Pitch black - save for the tea light candles lining each side of the stairs. Then, when you reach the top, it opens up to an intimate, swanky nightclub/lounge like venue, with clusters of women sitting in circles on plush lounges,  antique armchairs and French style chairs.  Towers of dainty food on tiered stands appear like towers above their heads on the coffee tables interspersed with all sorts of tea paraphernalia and flutes of champagne.

What we tried: Entree: Blue Ginger Sampler platter for 2 ($24) which contained two chicken rice paper rolls, two fish cakes, two skewered lemongrass prawns, and two vegetable spring rolls.

Mains: Five spice braised chicken and XO sauce seafood, fried rice

The presentation was fantastic. The restaurant is modern and trendy, and intimately lit, with a long communal table running along the centre of the room. It’s extremely busy on a Saturday night, so bookings are recommended.  Perhaps that’s why the staff were hasty in taking our orders as soon as my guest arrived. (more…)

Tony Roma’s for Ribs

CIMG0123 (Small).JPGRib sampler. 3 types of pork ribs, 2 beef ribs, and your choice of side (chips, coleslaw, corn, mash, baked potato) for $29.95.  Personally I prefer pork ribs as they’re leaner and less sinewy. The chips are amazing and the serving sizes HUGE.  Novelty of restaurant – the bibs they offer you, which any self respecting businessperson shouldn’t refuse lest a drop of the juicy sauce land on your shirt!
